Marolles-en-Hurepoix is a small attractive town of around 4,700 inhabitants situated in rural surrounding in the Canton Bretigny in the Department de l'Essonne some 40km/17miles to the south of Paris in the région of Ile-de-France. It can be reached by train on RER ligne C from Gare du Austerlitz in the centre of Paris in less than 40 minutes. Consequently many residents commute to Paris and other large towns in the region to work in industry and commerce. It has a supermarket and a number of small shops including, of course, 2 boulangerie. Like Southam it is situated in an agricultural region. Apart from Paris there are many other places of interest in the area. It is only 6km to the historic and very attractive town of Arpajon. The palaces of Versailles and Fontainbleu are each only about 40km from Marolles...

Town Hall Marolles (The Mairie)  Church undefined

The Mairie (Town Hall) fronts on to an attractive new square in the town centre opposite which is a wide tree lined boulevard with boules courts and other facilities including a sports hall and athletics and football stadium which are well used by many local clubs and associations. To the rear of the Mairie is a large playing field alongside which is a sheltered housing complex and also one of the two schools. The nearby Roman Catholic Church is another focal point. Light industrial estates are situated on the edge of the town. Those who know Southam will see that there are many similarities between the two towns that have been officially twinned since 1992.

Marolles Twinning Association visited Southam early May 2008 and the weather was absolutely superb for the entire visit. Coventry and its Cathedrals were visited on Saturday, and Sunday afternoon a tour of Southam & Holywell was enjoyed. Dinner at Stoneleigh Golf Club rounded off a superb weekend

Catherine has sent us the link to the photos she took - and excellent they are.

At the AGM held on Tuesday 27th February 2007 Stan Hodges was elected Life President of the association in recognition of his 20 year involvement in twinning. Stan had been present at the meeting called by the Town Council in March 1987 to explore the possibility of Southam finding a town with which to twin. He became a member of the steering group and when the Southam Twinning Association was formed  in 1992 he was elected Chairman, a position that he had held ever since.

Stan, a retired policeman who for some years was Southam's "Bobby", was born in Stockton. His successor as Chairman, Mike Hill, presented Stan with an engraved medallion and certificate to mark his many years promoting friendship between Southam and Marolles en Hurepoix. Stan drove a small party on an exploratory visit to Marolles in 1990 and this led to the towns being twinned in 1992. Over the years he organised at least a dozen trips, welcoming French visitors to Southam on a similar number of occasions.
